A Metaphysical Perspective
November 2009

I have received countless emails from concerned Americans that claim that God has in some way pulled away from our country because we have continually pulled away from God.  Others state that our current issues in this country are the result of God’s judgment for our multitude of sins, heresies and unfaithfulness.
While we may not agree with the theologies these emails present, we have to admit that these “cries in the wilderness” are signs that people are anxious about where we are going as a nation.  And they are grabbing hold of what they have been taught to explain their anxieties and to find ‘answers’ to the deep dilemmas in which we find ourselves immersed..
However, the ‘answers’ that many are grabbing hold of tend to be from traditional sources which, I believe, have become part of our problem.  As the old saying goes, “It is craziness to do [believe] the same things over and over and expect different outcomes.”
Thus, I offer here an outlook on our current situation(s) from a metaphysical position, which I know is completely outside of the traditional beliefs of most people.
It goes like this:  God has not pulled away from this country, nor has God pulled away from any individuals because God cannot pull away from Him/Her-self.  We are the expression of God in 3-D.  No one is ever lost, except in our own thinking, because nothing and no one can exist apart from God (Life, Love, Higher Power, Universe, Intelligence, or however we conceive that which is greater than we are).

As expressions of God we have complete freedom to create our world from our own consciousness.  And, that is just what we have done.  Many of us have gone through deep inner struggles because we cannot live with our traditional beliefs any longer.  As we struggle we begin to discover a way of believing that brings more light to our lives.  This light takes on the form of conversion experiences, finding Jesus, seeing the truth in the teachings/life of Buddha and others.  And we begin to move into another way of thinking/believing that enhances our lives and gives us a new sense of fulfillment.
Yes, there are signs that benevolent powers from beyond the veil are at work helping to shore us up.....to keep this world going in a positive forward direction, but God does not intervene, nor does God pull away.

Christ-Consciousness is within the individual (not at all limited to Christians), and that affects the larger group.  There is no judgment implied in what is happening; indeed there can be none because God "causes the rain to fall upon good and evil"......"God is not a respecter of persons"......God is not the judging god of the Old Testament, but is the empowering God of Jesus.
Buddha and other spiritual leaders have given us a similar message, in different concepts and words.
We, in fact, do reap what we sow.....but this is not about judgment.  It is the basic fact that if I step out in front of a truck I will get hit and maybe killed.  If I continue to live judgmental and negative attitudes (with hatred, prejudice, fear and separateness as dominant themes) then I am putting that energy out into my locale and the world and the universe, and I will draw like-energies to myself.  If I am consumed with hatred I will draw like-energies to myself.  When large groups of people join their collective energies in hatred and fear, they draw like-energies to themselves.  Great disasters are like-energy.
Likewise, the energies we emit as we try to understand, tolerate, and include will draw like-energies also.  "If you want to get letters, you must first write letters."
These energies are just energies; there is no judgment from God in any of this.  There is no 'good' or 'bad'.......there is only that which comes to us as a result of our love or fear.
I see the current trends of ‘God-removal’ from public life as connected somewhat to the fact that individuals are moving away from the institutional religions of our day.....if only because these traditional religions are mostly about power over the individual.  Historically, churches, synagogues, and other religious institutions have operated from the fear principle.....their very survival and power to influence people/events has depended upon this.

But as Myrtle Fillmore, co-founder of Unity, is reported to have said (at about age 85), "Do not listen to me, nor to Unity; Listen to your own heart."   People everywhere are looking for ‘answers’ that reflect what their hearts ‘know’ to be true.  This ‘knowledge’ will change in form over a life-time, but it is heart-knowledge none-the-less.

In Metaphysical Christian thought we believe in the Christ-Consciousness as I have said above.  We see Jesus’ life-purpose as that which empowered individuals that traditional religion and beliefs had marginalized.  He did that through healing and forgiveness.  He never condemned anyone who came to him.  He lived his message that each person is a Son/Daughter of God.  And, he taught people how to see themselves differently, creating beliefs around that paradigm.

Empowerment.....is the answer.  Institutions and leaders are so much more apt to create "victimization".  This means that those who see themselves as victims, or victimizers, will be dependent upon the leaders/institutions/healers, etc. for salvation/healing (institutional/ego security).  The whole idea of Jesus becoming the supreme 'victim' dying on the cross for our sins.....to appease an angry god...... is about 'dis-empowerment.'  If we are so bad that Jesus had to do this, and God demands justice/sacrifice.....then we cannot realize who we are as Daughters and Sons, co-creators of our reality with God.  We find ourselves constantly in debt.  This is the fundamentalist view that most of us in metaphysical religion have fled.
People are pulling away from all of this…. and rightly so…. and we have gaps right now.  When the Berlin wall crashed and the Soviet Bloc disintegrated people didn’t know what to do.  Suddenly they found themselves free without the structures in place to create and maintain their freedom.  As our structures crash and we find life changing dramatically we, too, find ourselves in that 'vacuum.'

So we in metaphysical thought/belief find that we have something to offer individuals in these moments of crisis.  Every single person on this planet, in his/her own understanding, can claim once and for all her/his rightful place as a co-creator of our reality, and learn to accept response-ability for who we are.
God-consciousness/Christ-consciousness......yes.
Realize our own divinity.....yes.

Live what we speak......yes.
Speak out......yes.
Speak our truth, all the while learning to do so out of our God/Christ-Consciousness that seeks to be life-enhancing and empowering to all. (Many didn't see Jesus in his own lifetime as such a 'positive, loving guy' because he lived and spoke out.... and did so strongly).
Hope this is clear.  This is my attempt...... because all that is being said and done right now is part of a great conversation that needs to continue.  And we are being given the opportunities to change on all fronts, especially in our self-limiting beliefs about God, self and life.
Blessings,
Bob
